Packaging for a premium

Written by Aimee Johnston | 12-Dec-2016 19:08:00

Packaging is one of the most neglected parts of a company's marketing and yet it is arguably one of the most important.

When you post a purchase to a customer you don't want to give the impression that you don't care about that transaction.   For many internet based businesses especially, the box that the products arrives in is a handshake between the company and the customer.  Aside from the website, a phone call to customer services or sales, the box is the only other interaction before touching the product that the customer has.

Apple places very high value in packaging.  From the thick white card on the box that will utlimately be thrown away to how the product is positioned within the box Apple treats the unpackaging of the product as part of the customer experience.

Packaging isn't a means to an end.  It's sole purpose is not simply to get the product into the hands of the purchaser, it's an announcement that you've arrived.

If you sell to businesses then the arrival of your box to the desk of the purchaser could be an opportunity to advertise to others around them.

Custom Packaging

Custom packaging should be seen as a marketing activity and an opportunity to promote your brand, and its value to others.  It should also be seen as an opportunity to add value to the client's perception of your brand.

If you charge a premium price for your product, or aspire to, then you must know that the value the customer sees is not limited to the product they bought.

Packaging improving profit?

Can the right packaging mean you can charge a premium?  Of course!

Take the example in the image.  A normal bottle of 150th anniversary Jack Daniel's 700ml costs just $54.99.  However, as soon as you add 300ml, put that same liquid in a decanter and fancy box (pictured) the retail price goes up to $215.  That's a 390% increase without the product ever actually changing.

Packaging for your brand

Luckily, we're here to help.  Even though we can't replicate the Jack Daniel's packaging above we can create custom carton sizes with your branding.  We can also create branded packaging tape.

These little touches might not mean you can charge thousands for your product but you can save money on shipping and let the recipient know that their order from you has finally arrived.
